Gorgeousness
I think I always knew what would happen.
Really.
Deep down.
"Let's drop in on our way back. Just a cup of tea."
Nass said.
We were going to Portsmouth to buy pieces for the shop.
Not all antiques.
But beautiful interior objects made by a Sussex artist.
It was my first visit and I was dumbstruck.
I know.
Not something that happens every day.
M does the most fabulous work.
These whales are hand-carved from reclaimed wood.
In ONE piece.
The wood is from Portsmouth dry docks.
They are beautiful
We bought this Jonah and a pair that swim together on a plinth.
I don't think M will be making more.
He says he just cannot get the right wood.
Beautiful hey?
Take a look at these signs.
They are recently painted, not old, but again on reclaimed wood.
The attention to detail is wonderful.
and the great thing is...
if you ever want a sign painted just for you.....with a 19th-century feel
for your shop
restaurant
home
den

Anyway, as usual, I digress.
So we were with the artist drinking tea in his sunny garden.
Surrounded by antique statues, vintage pots stuffed with
plants and bizarre pieces made out of antique and vintage paraphernalia.

I didn't take photos, though I was itching to.
It felt like I was invading his privacy.
His new addition came to see us.
A "Rottie" dog he and his wife had rescued.
They were socialising him.
Introducing him to anyone and everyone.
They were socialising him.
Introducing him to anyone and everyone.
They had lost their previous dog a few months before and couldn't bear to be without one.
I suspect that was the start of it.
" Yes," Nass told M, "We are getting a dog too."
"No," I said gently, "We are just going to look."
We DID drop by to our friends on the way back through Chichester.
Just for a cup of tea.......
Well, you know the rest..........
Would you just look at the joy on the old man's face |
Elsa will be residing at chez Nassarian from 18th of this month.
Nuff said.
Gilt Bowls
I've been busy getting ready for our Open Evening
I found some interesting odds and ends at Ardingly Antique Fair on Tuesday.
And no it wasn't quite like this.
It was cold, wet and pretty miserable.
But I still managed to fill my car to bursting.
Since then I've been working on gilt bowls ready for next week
This is usually how I find them.
Nice hey?
Hours of work and a smidgen of TLC
and here's what we have now.
They are painted first.
Then I gild them.
Then decoupage with 19th-century images.
To follow?
Layer upon layer of varnish.
et voila!
Heres a few of our other latest stock items.
Just right for Boxing day saumon n'est pas?
A French mid-century fish platter.
1940's French Tambours are great for storing all those shoes. |
This 19th century counter is out of an old French epicerie oooh there's an idea would make a great bar |
not sure why I didn't think of that myself |
19th-century French butcher's block |
19th-century wooden skittles...English |
We had to really talk our French guy into selling us this sign...I think it might have had sentimental value. But my Nass can be ruthless at times! |
Warehouses & Hidden Arundel
This 19th-century warehouse is over the road from ours.
Sadly looks as if it will be ripped down and in its place...yep, more retirement flats,
because we clearly don't have enough here in Arundel.
because we clearly don't have enough here in Arundel.
This lovely guy always has lunch and tea break in that doorway.
Rain or shine.
Rain or shine.
Memo to self.
I'm thinking it would be great to get a record of hidden Arundel.
I'm thinking it would be great to get a record of hidden Arundel.
Before more of it disappears.
And the characters attached to them.
And the characters attached to them.
Have a great day.
