Valentines Day
I was going through divorce.
Are they ever" amicable"?
Joined my son's school PTA.
Mostly to give myself something to take the mind of things.
We organised a summer ball.
Big posh do it was.
Slindon College the perfect setting.
Loads of Arundel folk turned out in their finery.
Some were a bit schoolkid naughty and threw bread rolls at each other other across the dining room...it was a fun night.
The duty teacher was the young, handsome sports master.
He hadn't wanted to attend but we talked him into it.
He dashed into Chichester in the afternoon to hire a dress suit.
Looked very handsome in his tuxedo.
Several of the mothers asked him to dance.
I fancied him from afar.
He helped us clear up the following day..and that..as they say..was that.
Only it wasn't.....
A couple of weeks later a friend came round for a glass of wine...I'd already had a couple..or was it three?
" Phone him....ask him out."
" I can't do that!"
"Have another...and phone him."
And I did.
We dated.
So different from each other that the school staff ran a book on us.
Gave us 6 months...tops.
If I'm honest I thought the same.
We were like chalk and cheese.
He was a bit on the wild side...but.. a pleasant temporary distraction from my crumbling life.
Plus... it didn't do my street cred any harm, having this young, handsome, charismatic man on my arm.
I had been studying photography and he made a great model.
I took my favourite negative to Bonusprint and ordered a large poster to be made.
On collection the shop assistant whistled..
" Wow..that's fantastic..my old man wouldn't let me have that on my wall."
My face went a bit pink as I grinned....
"That IS my old man....."
And...he's been my " old man" ever since...
For 34 years....
