Our Liberty Adventure

January 18th 2016

Ten years ago.

Occasionally the most extraordinary things happen in business as in life, don't they?

This one came completely out of the blue.

Early in December 2015, I received a phone call from a woman who claimed to be from the iconic Liberty store in London.

"Very funny Allie," I remember saying, thinking it was a friend's joke.

There was a slight pause..

"Er, no, this really is Liberty."

It turned out they had purchased a few of our decoupage pieces at Ardingly Antique Fair a few years before and loved them so much they wanted us to bring more.

Nass and I headed up to meet them just before Christmas.

The fourth floor was a whirlwind of festive baubles and shoppers.

We scoped out the space..about the size of our kitchen, and took measurements to ensure we brought the right amount of stock.

Returned home to Arundel buzzing with excitement.

January 18th, Nass and our friend Russ set off in the van, with my friend Allie and me following behind in the car.

Our team for the day.

Nass called me in a panic. "Bren our stuff won't even touch the sides"

"But we measured it."

"They've given us the run of the entire fourth floor!"

Imagine...a tiny business, tucked away down an alley in an old warehouse in Arundel....

catapulted into one of the most prestigious stores in the world.

"How will we fill it?"

While we weren't entirely broke, money was definitely tight.

What we did have though, was a warehouse filled with beautiful English and French antique stock, and an immense drive to make the opportunity a success.

And make it work, we did.

We stayed three years.

Liberty asked us to return, but lockdown happened, and the world – and our world – changed.

As far as business..

and life... adventures go...

....this one was a real corker.
