Arundel.... Or... Life in an English Country Town
It’s not only the castle dominating
the skyline that makes Arundel so special.
over houses built by Napoleonic prisoners of war.
Or the river that meanders through.
It’s not the many independent shops, galleries, restaurants, or pubs.
Or the walks that lead you mile after mile into places with the most spectacular of views.

Or the walks that lead you mile after mile into places with the most spectacular of views.
Where you can sit on hilltops far from
the madding crowd and just catch your breath.
It isn’t the history that dates back to Roman times or the streets that feel like a film set.
Or the locals, many of whom are artistic, musical, or just pleasantly eccentric.

Party in the jailhouse |
Or the serene setting for boating, wildlife and picnics that is Swanbourne Lake.
It isn’t only the Wildfowl Trust,
Not the Festival alone with it's 10 dizzy days of art and music,
Arundel Museum,
the swimming lido,
walking tours and music in the old jailhouse.

It’s that whole package and so much more besides.
Arundel is unique.
And no, I don't work for the Arundel Tourist Board.
(Now there's a thought)
But I have lived in the town for 30 years and think it's pretty special.

I remember him as a boy, hurtling down Tarrant Street on his skateboard, his pet rat on his shoulder.
(Told you it was an eccentrics town, now, didn't I?)
