Arundel Festival
Arundel Festival ...this will be it's 46th year.
We've seen some fabulous events in the festival over the years.
Shakespeare plays and tribute band concerts in the castle grounds were favourites in my early days in Arundel...
....the castle as a backdrop...groups of friends with picnics, candelabra on small tables....it was spectacular...
I lived in Tarrant Street then...
...on the last evening of the festival many along the road would sit on front steps...with groups of friends..usually with wine and nibbles
... to watch the torchlight procession that wound its way through town...decorated floats on lorries and trucks of all sizes....the last being a fire brigade truck...just in case
.....then we meandered down to the bridge to watch the firework display...the grand finale of the 10 day event.
I don't know how many years the town had the torchlight event...I'm sure an Arundel mullet would be able to tell us.....
(BTW...a mullet is someone that was born in the town...there's even a Mullet Register....
...they have copies in Kim's Bookshop at the bottom of Arundel High Street)
The torchlight doesn't happen any more .....health and safety... insurance costs would be exorbitant ...but it was extraordinary while it lasted.
The gallery trail began in 1989....from an idea that artist Ann Sutton had in the night....by the following evening she had contacted other local artists and started things moving...
..it is considered the first walking around art trail in the world...it's gone from strength to strength over the years....with a wealth of art passing through this little town.
....some of those original artists still on the trail to this day.
The excitement of exhibiting my photography on the first one....nerve-wracking too...it was the unknown
..there were around 50 artists exhibiting in their own homes...
... quite something for a small town....
This year's jam packed festival is on16th to 26th August..
