When I started out in business 28 years ago, it was with my friend Allie...
We were called Ambiance...and in the same warehouse Nass and I are now..
I was broke....
and running 2 jobs alongside the business, to pay bills...
..cleaning and private nursing.
There were times I forgot where I was meant to be...and occasionally turned up.. wrong day...wrong job....
Allie had young children and was balancing child care.
We trawled junk shops in Worthing....there were loads in those days.. buying the cheapest... most in need of TLC.. furniture we could find.
Learning to paint and decorate ...
... mostly from old books
......the occasional adult education workshop.
We were absolute novices.
I tried softening aging wax in Allie's microwave
.......don't try this at home folks,
......I almost blew her house up.
"Let's do decoupage" Allie announced one morning as we painted.
"WHAT is that?" I asked.
" Well..basically.... cutting and sticking."
And... life being full of strange coincidences
...that moment took us on a different, unplanned journey, and we worked for many years decorating with decoupage on Victorian bamboo for an internationally known antique dealer.
It later took Nass and I, by now working together as Arundel Eccentrics, to the 4th floor of Liberty London in 2016.
It's also wound up in some rather posh magazines like House and Garden and Architectural Digest....
and exceptionally smart stores in the US, Australia, New Zealand.. Dubai....
and on TV's 60 Minute Makeover
with the wonderfully eccentric interior designer Martin Lawrence Bullard and Peter Andre.
Arundel Eccentrics have a large collection of French and English antique furniture ...
but...we are still cutting and sticking...
